The review will be led by Sean Hägen, the current Medical Section Chair of the IDSA, and Mary Beth Privitera, Associate Professor and Director of the Medical Device Innovation & Entrepreneurship Program at the University of Cincinnati. Sean and Mary Beth are on the AAMI Human Factors committee that developed the standard and Mary Beth is a contributing author to HE75. The review’s agenda: an overview of the Standard’s contents and intention for use, three examples of how it could be used, and a Q&A session.

What is the AAMI/ANSI HE 75 standard?
The standard was developed by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) Human Factors committee in cooperation with the FDA; it supplants HE48 which was written in the mid 80s to provide design guidelines for user interface development in medical devices. The standard is a resource for human factors professionals, engineers, and designers and is expected to be incorporated into the design of all medical devices.

Derek Chen is a designer and the founder of Council Inc. With Council, Chen endeavors to build an American brand whose collections make a meaningful contribution to international contemporary design.

Chen’s own work reveals a facility with technology as well as an appreciation for the visual and tactile appeal of natural forms and materials. Chen has been designing and building things since childhood, and has most recently returned to his first love, furniture.

Before founding Council and his own design studio, Chen started Urbana Design, a company named after the city in which he spent much of his childhood. Urbana Design continues to produce sleek tabletop accessories sold in design stores around the country. Chen’s first career was as a management consultant advising clients in Europe, South America, and the United States.

Through Council, Urbana Design, and his studio, Chen’s work has been widely covered in the international design media. Chen has spoken on issues facing the contemporary design market in conjunction with museum exhibits and design trade shows.

Chen holds a degree in Electrical Engineering. He lives and works in San Francisco, California.

Digging Deeper Competition - Open Call for Entries

The SF Chapter of the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), the American Institute of Graphic Artists (AIGA) and the Interaction Designers Association (IxDA) would like to introduce you to this year’s Digging Deeper, Building Blocks for Sustainable Design - A multi-disciplinary design competition addressing real urban needs.

On the afternoon of Sunday Sept. 27th the Digging Deeper 2009 program began with two informative and inspiring presentations. A leading systems ecologist teamed up with the Greening Director of the Office of the Mayor of San Francisco to deliver a design brief. They describe issues around urban food supply, health and agriculture relevant to the City of San Francisco and all urban areas. The presentations were specifically formatted to be the foundation of this competition, bringing industrial, graphic and interaction designers, architects and urban planners together to help solve real urban problems. This is a call to action for all design communities.

In the first presentation Gil Friend, acclaimed systems ecologist and CEO of Natural Logic, works through proven techniques on how to break apart complex problems and devise sustainable implementable solutions. The second presentation is an in depth problem statement and call to action delivered by Astrid Haryati, the Greening Director for the Office of the Mayor of San Francisco. She explores the obstacles to, and overarching importance of Sustainable Urban Agriculture for education, health and community development in the context of personal, community and city wide scales.

The SF Chapter of the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), the American Institute of Graphic Artists (AIGA) and the Interaction Design Association (IxDA) would like to introduce you to Digging Deeper, Building Blocks for Sustainable Design, an exclusive workshop and sustainable design competition.

Digging Deeper seeks to give the Design Community an opportunity to use design thinking to generate a large set of potential solutions to local sustainability problems through competition.

Sunday afternoon participants will be introduced to a framework for solving large complex sustainability problems from sustainability consultant Gil Friend. Participants will then be briefed on a local city problem by Greening Director, Office of the Mayor of San Francisco, Astrid S. Haryati. After the presentations participants will be armed with the right set of tools to help the city in its continued green efforts. Individuals participating in the competition can find rules and submission requirements on the Digging Deeper community site.

Brett Lovelady is the founder and driving force at ASTRO Studios of San Francisco, a company he launched in 1994. Professor Martin Linder has worked as an industrial designer and educator for over two decades. Martin initially received national prominence for his award-winning designs during his graduate studies at the Cranbrook Academy of Art.

Martin has focused his design work on the creation of interfaces which enhance airport security. His innovative work with InVision Technologies and Reveal Imaging explosive detection programs are utilized in airports throughout the world. Martin was recently rewarded for his design innovations in explosive detection equipment with an Industrial Design Excellence Award sponsored by Business Week Magazine.

During Martin’s youth, he served for two years as an apprentice in New Hope Pennsylvania with the George Nakashima trained furniture designer sculptor James Martin. Martin’s professional furniture designs have been exhibited throughout the United States for the entirety of his career, most notably at Knoll/Design America, Steelcase's Metro Furniture, and Herman Miller’s Brandrud Furniture. His furniture designs have received both ADEX and S.P.E.C awards.

In addition to his success as an industrial designer, Martin has also distinguished himself as a design educator. After teaching at both the San Francisco Academy of Art and California College of Art in various facets of their design programs, Professor Linder came to San Francisco State University (SFSU). Martin teaches industrial and interface design, rapid prototyping technologies, design education and design management. San Francisco State University has honored Martin for his work as an academic with the 2009 Outstanding Community Service Learning Award that acknowledges “Exemplary Practice in Community-Based Teaching”, and the 2008 Sarlo Excellence in Teaching Distinguished Faculty Award, awarded to a faculty member for “Extraordinary, Meaningful, and Lasting Contributions to Teaching”. He was also named one of the "Most Admired Design Professors" in Academia by Design Intelligence. His students have won international research and design awards including the Industrial Design Excellence Award, and hold key design positions at companies including Nike, Steelcase, IDEO, Hewlett-Packard, and Kodak.

Martin currently devotes much of his time as the Founding Director of the Industrial Design Outreach program (iDo). iDo reaches out to public school teenagers in the bay area who are inspired by hands-on, tactile, experiential learning. iDo is a nationally recognized program which fosters curiosity, promotes creativity, and builds self confidence. Recently the iDo Community Bench Project was selected for display at the San Francisco De Young Museum and was featured on the Cover of the San Francisco Chronicle News paper. In addition to this, the 2009 iDo Community Bench Project was gifted to the Mayor of San Francisco and placed on permanent display at the San Francisco City Hall.

The Building:
Our studio is located in the DogPatch on the top floor of one of the old Cannery Buildings facing East with windows looking out at the bay and some classic industrial infrastructure at the intersection of 3rd St and 22nd. The building has 3 loading docks, 3 huge freight elevators, dumpsters for garbage & recycling. There is easy street parking with many great restaurants nearby. The building itself has hundreds of units all filled with creative entrepreneurs. It is one of the true creative incubation spaces in the Bay Area. Everything from wine makers, graphic artists, architects, photographers, woodworkers, model makers, furniture designers, chocolatiers and digital film makers are present. Most of the floor below us is taken up by the San Francisco Art Institute’s Graduate Studios and the adjacent building has similar creative occupants.

The Space:
We’ve been in the building for 3 years and moved into a new space 4 months ago. It has 2200 square feet of shop / prototyping / bench space and a 2000 square foot mezzanine level used for office / design / meeting /chill space. We have a full woodworking shop taking up 2/3rds of the downstairs with the other 1/3rd used for light metal fabrication, entry way & storage – the two areas are isolated from one another with positive airflow to prevent dust getting into the metalwork.

IDSA SF would like to announce our upcoming studio visit with Mike and
Maaike. In this unique setting, they will offer insights into their
experimental process. The format will be a brief presentation and
question period.

Mike and Maaike will be hosting this event at their storefront

The film Handmade Nation documents a movement or artists, crafters, and designers that recognize a marriage between historical techniques, punk and DIY ethos while being influenced by traditional handiwork, modern aesthetics, politics, feminism, and art. Today's crafters are no longer interested in simply cross-stitching samplers or painting floral scrolls on china. Christian Helms is a co-founder and partner in The Decoder Ring, a quirky and spirited young studio located in the ever-evolving epicenter of Texan hipness: Austin. There he spends his days harvesting the aesthetics of our past and scrambling them with awkward sketches, happy accidents and big ideas. Part designer, part writer and part dance-machine, Christian is proof positive that you can become a success by being "kinda good" at a lot of different things.

Beginning his career as an intern for Michael Beirut at Pentagram NY, Christian went on to blaze an unremarkable trail through Manhattan before serving as a founding member of John Bielenberg's socially-conscious design collective, Project M. His obsessive sketching and perpetual motion has resulted in award-winning work for clients ranging from Wilco and Modest Mouse to Leo Burnett and Toyota.

Christian's served as a juror for the Communication Arts Design Annual, designed packaging that's debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts and his work has received awards and publication by a host of esteemed entities including Communication Arts, Graphis, Step Inside Design, ID, Print, Metropolis-- not to mention the Bessemer City, NC chapter of the Benevolent Knights of Pythias.

Studio Explorations - Cheskin Added Value - June 11

IDSA SF would like to announce our upcoming studio visit with Cheskin Added Value.

Designers have typically been recognized for our ability to think "out of the box" and arrive at unexpected solutions. Yet, to the uninitiated, we're mainly associated with the artifacts we produce. What's more useful for solving problems in the business realm is how designers get at unexpected solutions...referred to as "Design thinking".

The session will be lead by CEO, Darrel Rhea and Design Practice Director, Joanne Mendel and will highlight the many ways design informs Cheskin's approach to innovation.

Cheskin will be hosting this event at their offices on June 11, 2009. Doors open from 6-8pm. The program will begin at 6:30.

Mark Dwight is the founder and CEO of Rickshaw Bagworks, a new San Francisco-based manufacturer of messenger bags, computer carrying cases and lifestyle luggage. Dwight was formerly the CEO of Timbuk2 Designs (2002-2006), where he oversaw a financial turnaround and period of rapid growth, and then sold the company to private equity investors in 2005. Previously, Mark worked at Cisco Systems (1997-2001). Additionally, Mark was the co-founder of Astro Studios, a San Francisco-based product design consultancy, and Director of Product Development for Kensington, a leading brand of consumer PC accessory products. Dwight has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (’82) and an MBA (’89), both from Stanford. Dwight currently serves on the Board of Directors of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce and Mavericks Surf Ventures.

Stephen Key, Co-Founder, inventRight
Stephen Key is a successful award-winning inventor who has licensed over 20 products in the past 25 years. A holder of over twelve patents, Stephen’s products have sold in Wal-Mart, 7 Eleven, Disney Stores and theme parks worldwide and have been endorsed by basketball great Michael Jordan and Jeopardy host Alex Trebek. Stephen is a Disney licensee and has a new fruit beverage call Twist N Chill due to hit stores in the Spring of 2009 featuring Hannah Montana and Cars.

Along with business partner Andrew Krauss, Stephen runs inventRight, a company dedicated to educating inventors about selling their ideas and teaching them the skills needed to successfully license their ideas. Jeff Barnes, General Partner, Clean Pacific Ventures

Jeff Barnes has had three successful results with start-ups, providing a strong operational and strategic experience base for managing venture investments. Prior to co-founding Clean Pacific Ventures, Jeff spearheaded business development and marketing for Purfresh, a venture-backed clean technology water and food purification company with a long list of Fortune 500 customers. Jeff also was the first marketing and business development executive of two successful technology start-ups, VocalPoint (acquired by Telecom Italia) and Acendi. Previously, Jeff spent 5 years at Bain & Company in the Private Equity and Technology practices consulting to private equity funds and to major technology companies. Jeff has invested in Blingo (acquired by Publishers Clearing House), VocalPoint (acquired), Advanced Educational Corporation (acquired), Purfresh, SunLink and Marrone. Jeff holds a BBA in Finance from Southern Methodist University and a MS in Management from the London School of Economics.

Scott Yu, Chief Creative Officer, Vode Lighting LLC

Scott Yu is Chief Creative Officer at Vode Lighting LLC, a self-funded company, which he co-founded with partners George Mieling and Tom Warton in 2005. At Vode, Scott brings his passion in design and sustainability to the manufacturing of low-energy consumption lighting. Vode has enjoyed tremendous recognition since its inception and has been involved in numerous projects including California Academy of Sciences, Autodesk (a LEED Platinum project) in San Francisco, Harley Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, Microsoft Corporate Campuses near Seattle, the King County Library System in Washington State and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia.

Scott graduated from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena with a B.S. degree in Transportation Design in 1982. He worked in Europe for Peugeot S.A. as a Chief Designer. In 1986, he returned to the United States to work for Ford Motor Company as Design Manager. In 1990, he returned to San Francisco and co-founded Gingko Design Inc.

Our goal is to take the visit a step further and create a forum which allows a studio to show off that singular talent or practice that makes it unique. Our mission is to work with studios to prepare a short presentation or discussion during the visit which highlights new intelligence or a unique practice that weaves its way through the work or culture of that studio.

John Edson, President, LUNAR (www.lunar.com)

“I’d love to talk with anyone interested, but I think I’d be best suited to speaking with entrepreneurial creatives who have a well-developed point of view – but who are interested in the business framework required to exchange their talent for money.”

As a seasoned product developer with a background in both analytical and creative thinking, John’s primary role is to build new programs that make a real difference for clients. His experience includes managing the birth of successful products for Philips, Motorola, InFocus, and several startups. Products developed under John’s management have been honored with accolades from the ID Magazine Design Annual, the Chicago Athenaeum Good Design Award, iF Hannover, PC Magazine’s Editor’s Choice Award, and IDSA’s Industrial Design Excellence Award.

John ensures that LUNAR’s environment is one where our culture of creativity thrives by supporting our diverse, international staff with educational opportunities and the freedom to experiment with new ideas on company time. Developing the contribution of design creativity and innovation process in the service of business, society and the environment, John explores the impact of design creativity through the weekly podcast, Icon-o-Cast, that he hosts with guest speakers ranging from Business Week’s Bruce Nussbaum to author and cognitive scientist Don Norman. John is also a regular speaker, having lectured at Wharton School, given a keynote at Intertech’s Flexible Display Technologies conference, and participated in a talk for the Business Marketing Association of Northern California. An occasional lecturer at Stanford, John teaches courses in product design and creativity.

John has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from The University of Texas at Austin and a master’s degree in product design from Stanford University. Prior to joining LUNAR, he served as a product designer for Ignition in Dallas, TX and as a freelance designer. On his own time, John can often be found at the helm of a sailboat on San Francisco Bay or pedaling up King’s Mountain Road.

Ashton Udall Global Sourcing Specialists

Ashton Udall possesses product management, international sourcing, and trade experience. As a partner at the product development and sourcing firm, Global Sourcing Specialists, he is responsible for the management of new consumer product development and sourcing activities and works closely with engineering and sourcing teams in China. He has assisted businesses, startups, and product developers with the development and sourcing of their products in Asia.

Mr. Udall’s previous experience consists of assisting a Chinese sourcing company with opening up its first United States office, as well as international trade policy research. At the East-West Center, a highly regarded policy think-tank in Honolulu, Hawaii, he worked with international teams of government officials and trade policy researchers on various trade projects concerning the Asia-Pacific region. His work focused on foreign direct investment in Asia and a United States Trade Representative sponsored study regarding the development of a US-Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Trade Agreement. Mr. Udall has an MA in Asian Studies and is completing his MBA.

Matthew Lawyer Entrepreneur and former patent agent

MD, JD, MPH, registered USPTO patent agent and entrepreneur, studied philosophy and biology at Emory University followed by law and medicine at Southern Illinois University.

Dr. Lawyer currently resides in San Francisco and specializes in commercializing biotech and communication technologies. As a former practicing patent agent, he was responsible for all aspects of patent preparation and prosecution including national and foreign applications, drafting licensing agreements, freedom to operate opinions and documents in preparation of litigation.

A few of Dr. Lawyer’s current ventures include www.bookflow.com, an internet-based business selling digital copies of rare/ antiquarian books, and his most recent venture is a soon-to-be-released social-networking iphone application, www.heydarhotspots.com.

Mike Strasser, Managing Member, Think2Build and ReactorSF
Mike has over 14 years of experience in product design consulting and has worked at a wide range of companies including NASA-Ames, IDEO, BMW, Apple, and Kestrel. Mike is on over 18 patents and helped develop dozens of products including the Tracker avalanche rescue beacon, Gerber’s manual breast pump, game controllers for Logitech, P&G’s Swiffer Carpet Flick, Apple's optical mouse, several medical devices, printer technology development for HP, a new line of furniture for Steelcase, and the BACTrack personal blood alcohol tester.

In 2005, Mike founded Think2Build LLC, a consultancy in San Francisco that specializes in design and engineering from concept to production, but also aids many startups in the early stages including early research, concept development, patent strategy, and investor presentations.

In 2007, Mike started a shared workspace called the Reactor (www.reactorsf.com), a place to setup shop for Think2Build as well as create a space for other companies to have a place to work and share ideas. There are currently 9 companies residing at the Reactor. This highly collaborative environment has since spawned 2 new companies for which Mike is also part of.

Mike has a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and a MSE from Stanford in Product Design.

This information will subsequently be translated into prospective markets. Finally, creative options, ways to approach and entice these consumers, will be discussed (materials, colors, shapes).

Francoise Serralta – Stategic Research and Planning
Director, Peclers Paris

Leads the study of lifestyle evolution and consumer trends, translating them into strategic orientations. She is co-responsible for the conceptualization and direction of PeclersParis’ audio-visual presentations and publications and spearheads the development of the most transversal and prospective publication: Futur(8). Francoise Serralta’s expertise is seminal in assisting leaders in their research and development for materials, color and surface effects, textiles, automotive design, industrial design, lifestyle marketing and entertainment. She is an internationally renowned speaker and organizes and conducts training sessions at a variety of schools. Once a year, Francoise travels to the West Coast to offer PeclersParis’ clients the opportunity to interact with her about Futur(8) and engage in an exchange, focused on inspiration and the in-depth analysis of consumer attitudes.

Alexander Rose – Executive Director, The Long Now
Foundation

Hired as the first employee of The Foundation in February of 01997. Alexander has been an artist in residence at Silicon Graphics Inc., a project manager for Shamrock Communications, and a founding partner of Inertia Labs. Alexander has attended the Art Center College of Design and graduated with a bachelor of arts honors degree from Carnegie Mellon University in Industrial Design in 01995. As the director of Long Now, Alexander has facilitated projects such as the 10,000 Year Clock with Danny Hillis, The Rosetta Project, Long Bets, Seminars About Long Term Thinking, Long Server and others. Alexander shares several design patents on the 10,000 Year Clock with Danny Hillis, the first prototype of which is in the
Science Museum of London. Alexander’s personal interests include rock climbing, snowboarding, mountaineering, mountain
bike riding, Bio Diesel vehicles, and travel. Alexander’s combat robots have won over six world championship titles
appearing in the TV show BattleBots. Alexander has also built large pyrotechnic displays for the Burning Man festival and
other dangerous machines. Alexander is a nominating judge at the Webby’s, and founded the Robot Fighting League. In his
past he was also a world champion paintball player holding multiple world titles with his team the Ironmen from 1990
through 1995. At Carnegie Mellon University Alexander was the lead designer for a record setting human power vehicle team.

Travis Lee, Sustainable Engineering Lead, LUNAR

As Sustainable Engineering Lead, Travis is responsible for coordinating sustainable engineering efforts within LUNAR Elements,
LUNAR’s internal sustainability initiative. This responsibility includes driving the creation of guidelines and tools for designers and engineers, advancing the sustainability dialogue with clients, and continuously making LUNAR a more sustainable company in its day to day operations. He is a co-author of LUNAR’s “Designer’s Field Guide to Sustainability” and author of LUNAR’s daily sustainability inspiration series “365 Ways.” While at LUNAR he has contributed to designs for commercial photovoltaic systems, medical diagnostics equipment, and consumer electronics including the recently launched HP MediaSmart Server, which received a CES Innovations Design and Engineering Award and an iF Hannover Product Design Award. Travis holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.

Joep Meijer graduated from the University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands with a degree in environmental chemistry in 1996 and has been working in the construction industry since 1997. Joep specializes in quantifying environmental performances and has been recognized by industry and government allowing him to draft national standards for environmental product declarations and certifying over 60 industries. He developed tailored tools for governmental design for road and construction works, for industries ranging from individual producers to national associations. In 2006 he founded theRightenvironment in Austin Texas, an independent consultancy assisting clients with baselining, footprinting and improvement strategies. He is creative, flexible, is a solution finder and a good communicator. Joep Meijer has over 10 years of project management background.

Nathan Shedroff is the chair of the ground-breaking MBA in Design Strategy at California College of the Arts (CCA) in San Francisco, CA. This program melds the unique principles that design offers business strategy with a vision of the future of business as sustainable, meaningful, and truly innovative—as well as profitable. www.designmba.org Nathan earned an MBA in Sustainable Management from Presidio School of Management in San Francisco, where he currently teaches. He also has a BS in Industrial Design, with an emphasis on Automobile Design from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He is one of the pioneers in Experience Design, an approach to design that encompasses multiple senses and requirements and explores common characteristics in all media that make experiences successful, as well as related fields, Interaction Design and Information Design. He speaks and teaches internationally and has written extensively on design and business issues, including, Experience Design 1 and maintains a website with resources on Experience Design at www.nathan.com/ed. He’s a serial entrepreneur, works in several media, and consults strategically for companies to build better, more meaningful experiences for their customers. He lives in San Francisco where the climate, culture, and industry make it easy to have an esoteric and amorphous title like Experience Strategist and actually make a living. Digging Deeper Conference

The IDSA SF Chapter has been hard at work creating the event of the summer. Dubbed "Digging Deeper", the evening conference will tackle eco-issues that confront designers.

As the dialogue around sustainability expands and points of view proliferate, distinct courses of action blur. Every choice is a trade off. Getting smart when designing green means understanding context.

Digging Deeper seeks to equip designers with the questions, methods and actionable tools for designing green. Experts on measuring the environmental, social and business impacts of design decisions will demonstrate appropriate research methods and strategies required for success and ensure a sustainable future. Emerging solutions will be documented in an online toolkit to enable broader knowledge sharing and the development of best practices for Sustainability in Design.

In April 2008, Project H will be traveling to South Africa on a mission to deliver 50 Hippo Rollers – a water transportation system that provides 3 days worth of water, reduces potential injury, and empowers people to collect a fundamental element, water.

The best part? You have a opportunity to take part without leaving your chair. Project H Design is accepting donations to fund 50 Hippo Rollers for a group of 17 villages in the Kgautswane community of Northeast South Africa - total population 120,000.
